A Marine Adventure for a Rookie

I'd consider it a dream come true.  Perhaps even one of the things on my '10 things to do before I die' list, even though I don't have one! (Seriously, I should make one!)

Earlier this month, I was excited to be in Cairns, Queensland, to experience the Great Barrier Reef! I'm not much of a swimmer and I've never entered the water except in a swimming pool.  So it was with mixed feelings that I took on this thrilling adventure!

On the big day, we boarded a large catamaran and set off on a two-hour ride towards the Great Barrier Reef.  Like many others, we enjoyed the cool, fresh morning air on the top, open deck.  It was a beautiful sunny morning that turned suddenly dark, bringing along a heavy drizzle seemingly to prep us for our underwater adventure.  The smooth ride turned bumpy as we got farther and farther away from the mainland.  Some people got seasick.  I thanked my stars too soon.  About half way through our journey, my stomach began to churn.  Was it nervousness or seasickness? Perhaps both.  Luckily I held on well until we finally reached our destination - a docking station/platform in the heart of The Great Barrier Reef! After a safety briefing, we disembarked.

Everybody seemed to know exactly what to do next - grab a bench for belongings, borrow lycra suits and snorkelling/diving equipment and finally...jump into the water!

I was still a little shaken up from our ride in so I rested a bit before we boarded a semi-submersible boat with glass windows.

My first impression of the Great Barrier Reef from the boat was unexpected - I was disappointed! We saw some reef which looked really dry (I later learned they were 'dead' reef) and just a few fishes.  But as we moved further away from our docking station, the reef was more 'alive' and vibrant.

We also took a ride on a glass-bottomed boat.

The highlight of the day was the Guided Snorkelling tour.  Fully aware of our swimming limitations, our guide instructed and helped us with the snorkeling equipment and patiently led us into the cold, deep ocean waters.  And then began our 'real' adventure we'd gone all the way to The Reef for!

Led by our guide who towed a floating ring that we held on to, we commenced our much-awaited adventure.  At first I was a little tense in the ocean waters.  But as I took in the beauty of nature under water, I relaxed gradually.

Our guide, a qualified Marine Naturalist, stopped often to point out things and share interesting facts about the reef and the fishes swimming past us. I was wonderstruck by the colourful marine life around us. Never before had I seen or experienced anything like this - swimming amongst the fishes in cool waters of the ocean!  Beautiful fishes swam all around us - parrotfish, damselfish, butterfly, clownfish.  We were also lucky to see the endangered Giant Maori Wrasse, one of the largest fishes on the reef.

Unlike the boat ride, my impression of the Great Barrier Reef was one of AWE.  I wished our snorkeling tour would never end, but of course, it did!

The Great Barrier Reef is truly one of the great natural wonders of the world.  As we flew out of Cairns, we caught one last glimpse of the Reef from our flight.

Farewell! Adios! Phir Milengey!  I'll be back someday!
